Pickleball was created in 1965 , after playing golf during the summer, Joel Pritchard, a congressman from Washington, and Bill Bell, a successful businessman, returned to Pritchard's home on Bainbridge Island, near Seattle, Washington.
With the kids bored at home, they tried playing badminton on an old court but couldn't find the right equipment.
They improvised and played with ping-pong paddles and a perforated plastic ball. They started with the net at the height of the badminton net and played back and forth across the net.
As the game progressed over the weekend, they discovered that the ball bounced well on the asphalt surface and lowered the net. The following weekend, Barney McCallum joined them and they began to play, creating the rules of pickleball.
The men recalled that the original purpose of creating the game was so that the whole family could play it when they were bored.
By 1967, the first permanent pickleball court was built in the backyard of Pritchard's friend and neighbor Bob O'Brian.
The first pickleball rulebook was published in 1984 by the United States Amateur Pickleball Association, which was committed to the growth and advancement of the sport.
By 1990 , pickleball was played in all 50 states in the United States .
In 2001 , pickleball was introduced to the Arizona Senior Olympics , attracting 100 players, which was the largest event played up to that time.
In 2005 , the United States Pickleball Association was established. Three years later, the USAPA Rules Committee published an official rulebook.
The first USAPA National Tournament was held in November 2009 and featured nearly 400 players from 26 states and several Canadian provinces.
Since September 2023 , in Spain, the Spanish Pickleball Association became part of the structure of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation as a new sport in order to promote it in our country and achieve something similar to what is happening in the United States.
