The serve is the opening shot that marks the beginning of each point in pickleball. In addition to starting the game, the serve provides the opportunity to set the tone and control the pace of the point, if it is a good serve.
An effective serve creates opportunities to gain advantage on the point, a bad serve gives an advantage to the opponent who quickly moves up, wins the net and has control of the point.
Basic Serving Techniques
1. Correct Position:
Position yourself in the service area, behind the baseline.
Keep your feet shoulder-width apart for added stability.
Orient your body sideways towards the diagonal opposite to the opponent's reception area.
2. Proper Grip:
Uses a continental or hammer grip for versatility and control.
Make sure the paddle handle is held firmly in your hand for a consistent stroke.
3. Arm Movement:
Start the movement from behind and down, keeping your elbow slightly bent.
As you hit the ball, extend your arm forward in a fluid, controlled motion.
4. Contact with the Ball:
Aim to hit the ball slightly above the waist for a downward angle.
Hit the ball with an upward motion to generate spin and control.
5. Follow-up:
After impact, follow through on the forward motion and adjust your stance as needed to prepare to return the return.
Remember - When you serve, wait for the opponent's return to bounce in your court. You must NOT go up to the net, as you have to let the opponent's return bounce.
